AUDREY HEPBURN IS BORN

Audrey Hepburn was nominated for five Oscars, and won Best Actress for the movie Roman Holiday. She is one of only 15 actors to have won an Emmy, Grammy, Tony, and Oscar.

Hepburn moved between England and The Netherlands in the 1930s, but had to remain in The Netherlands once the Nazis occupied the country. Her family faced many hardships, including near starvation during the Dutch famine, when the Nazis blocked food from entering the country. Perhaps it was the memories of hardship from her childhood that prompted her to volunteer for UNICEF.

UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund), is an arm of the United Nations that works to protect the rights and safety of children throughout the world. In 1988, Hepburn became the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, and remained in the position until her death in 1993. During this time, she visited over twenty countries in peril to meet with children and to advocate for their safety and well being.

Hepburn spoke to Congress in 1991, to advocate for the end of wars in Africa. She also spoke in front of the United Nations on the 30th anniversary of the Convention of the Rights of the Child, which established basic human rights for children all around the world. UNICEF now has the Audrey Hepburn Society to acknowledge generous contributions to the organization. For her tireless humanitarian work, President George H. W. Bush presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992.

Hepburn passed away on January 20, 1993, Inauguration day for President Bill Clinton. In a recent interview, President Clinton found out for the first time that Hepburn died on his Inauguration Day. He was shocked to hear the coincidence, and marveled at her talents.
