Elizabeth Catlett is widely considered to be one of the most important and influential African American artists in the 20th and 21st centuries. Influenced by her teachers Loïs Mailou Jones and Grant Wood, Catlett used both sculpture and print making to depict the African American experience. Grant Wood was one of her biggest fans, and he encouraged her to paint the life and the people she knew the best. You can visit her woks at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture, and you can explore more of her work on Google Arts & Culture.
