Born Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi circa 1386 in the Republic of Florence (now Florence, Italy).
Known for his sculptures and reliefs made from wood, marble, and bronze. His subjects are often in a Contrapposto pose (natural pose), where the weight of the person is heavier on one side and the opposite hip is shifted up. This creates an "S" shape with the body and makes the sculpture look more realistic.
Considered to have created the Renaissance style of sculpture. Donatello's work would go on to influence Michelangelo and Raphael, who were born less than 20 years after his death.
Died on December 13, 1466, at the age of 79 or 80, in the Republic of Florence (now Florence, Italy).
In the Christian faith, Saint Mark is also known as Mark the Evangelist. He is thought to have lived from 12 - 68 CE, mostly in Alexandria, Egypt. Mark is believed to be one of the four main Gospel writers of the New Testament of the Bible, in addition to Matthew, Luke, and John. In works of art, Saint Mark is often presented in a flowing robe holding a book, or as a winged lion near an open book. Donatello was commissioned by the linen weaver's guild to sculpt Saint Mark for the Orsanmichele in Florence, Italy. It's no surprise that there is a lot of fabric carved into this sculpture.
