1906 SAN FRANCISCO EARTHQUAKE

The Richter scale is how we measure the power of earthquakes. It was developed in 1935 by Charles Richter, which is why the measurement of the 1906 earth quake is estimated at 8.0. You can watch a great BrainPop where Tim & Moby explain plate tectonics, and how earthquakes occur.

On April 14, 1906, just four days before the earthquake, film makers The Miles Brothers created a short movie of what it looked like to ride in a buggy in the center of San Francisco. Film was a very new medium, and this was a very special recording. It is stored in the Library of Congress so that our nation will always have access to the contents of the film. Photographs of the destruction also remain. Many can be seen in this article.

Magic Tree House Earthquake in the Early Morning by Mary Pope Osborne, and. I Survived the San Francisco Earthquake by Lauren Tarshis, are great historical fiction books for you to read!
