MODERN OLYMPIC GAMES

May I suggest watching videos of Olympic highlights, and taking a closer look at great Olympic athletes like Carl Lewis, Wilma Rudolph, Michael Phelps, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Jesse Owens, and Simone Biles.

Did you know that the five rings represent the five continents that take part in the Olympic Games (with North and South America counting as one)?  The colors of the rings and the white background of the flag also represent the colors in all of the nations' flags that participate in the Games.  There is a great BrainPop about the Olympics that you can watch.

You can also visit the Archaeology Museum of Olympia, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Olympia.  National Geographic partnered with UNESCO to create this cool video of the site and the artifacts found there.

To date, athletes from the United States have won 2,629 medals at the modern day Summer Olympics, 1,060 of those medals are gold.  The United States ranks first out of all nations in the Summer Olympic medal count, and second in the Winter Olympic medal count, with 330 medals.  Norway is first in the Winter Olympics medal count with 405 medals in total.

In 2019, I traveled to Greece and visited Olympia, the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site

It is the home of the Ancient Olympics

I even got to run in the original stadium!
