Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol (1928 - 1987)

Born Andrew Warhola Jr. on August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, PA.

Most famous for being a Pop artist, Andy Warhol got his inspiration from consumable items like soup cans and soda bottles. He also loved famous people and became friends with many stars of the time; he often took their pictures and turned them into prints.

Known for colorful, often humorous silkscreen prints that represented American culture and fame. Warhol also made movies, took thousands of photographs, painted, and started Interview Magazine, which is still published today.

Died on February 22, 1987, at the age of 58 in New York City.

Though Andy Warhol did not create Pop art, he is one of the most recognizable artists of this genre. Inspired by popular images and popular people, he created colorful prints using unexpected color pallets. Warhol also made exact copies of of items like Campbell's Soup cans, Coca-Cola bottles, and boxes of Brillo Soap Pads. He is famous for saying, "In the future, everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes." This is where the term "fifteen minutes of fame" comes from. Nearly every art museum you visit will have something made by Andy Warhol in their collection, this is because he created many works of art in his lifetime. He also had many artists helping him create the artwork at his studio, which he called The Factory. You can learn more about Andy Warhol at his Foundation for the Visual Arts website, and you can see images from a variety of museums with Google Arts & Culture.
