Born Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni on March 6, 1475, in Caprese, Republic of Florence; primarily grew up in the city of Florence.
Worked as a paid artist from the age of 14, and during his life created sculptures, reliefs, frescos, and buildings. In 1504, his 17-foot marble sculpture David, made Michelangelo a famous and sought after artist.
Often worked for the Pope and the Catholic Church, his most ambitious project was painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel from 1508 - 1512, and then the wall behind the altar in the same space from 1534-1541. Fun fact, Raphael also created art for the Sistine Chapel, by making a series of tapestries for the walls.
Died on February 18, 1564, at the age of 88, in Rome, Papal States (now Rome, Italy).
Michelaengelo, Leonardo daVinci, and Raphael all lived in Florence at the same time. They knew each other, but did not necessarily like each other. Leonardo was the oldest and his art had a significant impact on the artistic styles of Michelangelo and Raphael. Leonardo and Michelangelo did not like each other at all and had a tense relationship. Michelangelo and Raphael were closer in age (eight years apart), didn't really like each other, and competed with each other. Michelangelo worked on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel for four years. The images are fresco paintings, which is a technique where the artist applies color pigments onto wet plaster to create the image.
