I recommend exploring what other units are in the Metric System - officially known as the International System of Units (SI). Did you know that the United States has a National Institute of Standards and Technology? One of their jobs is to provide information about measurement standards.
The United States uses its own measurement system called the US Customary Units, but we still use the metric system in STEM research. There is a BrainPop to explain the US Customary Units. There is also a good article about why the US does not use the Metric System.
The definition of meter has since been updated and is now "the length of the path travelled by light in a vacuum during a time interval of 1/299,792,458 of a second". Well, I'm just glad that we have the meter stick as a tool to help us measure!
