JUNE 14

FLAG DAY

If you visit Washington, DC, you can see the American Flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write our National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner. The 30' x 34' flag is housed at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. The flag survived a battle on September 13, 1814, during the the War of 1812 (the War of 1812 was fought in America, was between the United States and Britain, and lasted until 1815).

Key wrote The Star Spangled Banner the day after the battle on September 14, 1814. As the sun rose, he saw that the American Flag had survived, and was inspired to write the song. The Star Spangled Banner was declared to be our National Anthem by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. The measure was passed by Congress in 1931.

On a recent episode of CBS Sunday Morning, Annin Flagmakers were profiled. They started making flags in 1847, and haven't stopped yet!
