Grant Wood (1891 - 1942)

Born Grant DeVolson Wood on February 13, 1891, in a rural area of Anamosa, Iowa

Attended an art school run entirely by women called The Handicraft Guild in Minneapolis, MN

Wood attended The Art Institute of Chicago, then taught art at the University of Iowa

He died of cancer on February 12, 1942, at the age of 50, in Iowa City, Iowa

Grant Wood was famous for painting realistic portrayals of Midwestern American life. In 2018, CBS Sunday Morning highlighted his retrospective that was held at the Whitney Museum. You can visit American Gothic at The Art Institute of Chicago, and visit his studio in Cedar Rapids, IA.
