Tara Donovan

Tara Donovan (1969 - present)

Born on November 16, 1969, in Flushing, Queens, New York.

She earned a BFA from Corcoran College of Art and Design in 1991, and her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1999.

Was a 2008 MacArthur Fellow. This is a prestigious award that gives the artist or intellect a total of $800,000 over the course of five years to help fund their art or further their research.

Is known for using found objects like cups, straws, toothpicks, and slips of paper to create large-scale instillations and sculptures.

Watch this video to learn more about Tara Donovan's process. Let's watch her working with a team to install an exhibit at a museum. In 2015, she transformed cups, mylar, and slinkys into large-scale works of art at Jupiter Artland in Edinburgh, Scotland.  In 2016, the Smithsonian American Art Museum hosted an exhibit at the Renwick Gallery titled, WONDER. In it were several large-scale works of art installed in their own rooms. I was able to see this show and was blown away by the size and scale of the works. Tara Donovan had a work on display there, as well as many other innovative artists. I encourage you to check out the website and videos from the show to see the interesting works! You can see the instillation process of the MFA sculpture here.
