Faith Ringgold wrote the picture book Tar Beach in 1991, and it won the 1992 Caldecott Honor. In 2016, she read the book aloud for NPR.

In March of 2024, Ms. Donahue went to a Faith Ringgold exhibit at the Worcester Art Museum in Worcester, MA. Faith Ringgold passed away just a few weeks after her exhibit closed.
