Edward Hopper

Edward Hopper (1882 - 1967

Born Edward Hopper on July 22, 1882, in Nyack, NY.

Attended the New York School of Art and Design, where he studied under the famed art instructor William Merritt Chase. Hopper also went to Europe three times to improve his painting technique.

Is known for creating paintings that capture a moment in time from everyday life. His use of light and sunshine on buildings, looking through windows, as well as a soft-focus effect created a trademark look in his paintings.

Died on May 15, 1967, at the age of 84, in Manhattan, New York, NY.

In 2023, the Whitney Art Museum hosted an exhibit of Hopper's New York City views. CBS Sunday Morning visited the exhibit and went to his studio in Washington Square in NYC, which is preserved and maintained by New York University. In 2007, the Museum of Fine Arts hosted a retrospective of his art which CBS News visited. After Hopper's death, his wife and fellow artist Josefine donated over 3,000 of their works to the Whitney Museum. Many of his other works of art are at MoMA, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Des Moines Art Center in Iowa. Hopper and his wife spent nearly 40 summers living and painting on Cape Cod in South Truro! Many of his sketches and paintings are of buildings and landscapes on Cape Cod, Gloucester, and the Maine coastline.
