Fritz Scholder

Fritz Scholder (1937 - 2005)

Born Fritz William Scholder V on October 6, 1937, in Breckenridge, MN. He was an enrolled member of the Luiseño Band of the La Jolla Indians, he also had German and English ancestry.

Studied with Wayne Thiebaud in the late 1950s and opened an art gallery with him. Earned his bachelor's degree from Sacramento State University in 1961, and his MFA from the University of Arizona, Tucson in 1964. Was an instructor at the Institute of American Indian, where he taught TC Cannon.

Known for painting American Indians as he saw them in modern day. He created paintings, lithographs, prints, and sculptures.

Died on February 10, 2005 in Scottsdale, AZ. He was 67 years old.
