MARCH 24

OK!

May I suggest exploring the top 100 misspelled words in the English language, finding Kinderhook, NY on GoogleMaps, and thinking about the abbreviations and slang words that you use (OMG, can you believe it? LOL!).  You can listen to the Tippycanoe and Tyler Too winning campaign song, archived in the Smithsonian, as well as the version by the band They Might Be Giants.

Martin Van Buren (1782 - 1862) was the 8th President of the United States who served one term from 1837-1841.  Before that he was the 8th Vice President of the United States under President Andrew Jackson (1833-1837), The 13th Minister to the United Kingdom (1831-1832), the 10th Secretary of State (1829-1831), the 9th Governor of New York (serving just three months in 1829), and a US Senator from New York (1821-1828).  Van Buren was also a founding member of the Democratic Party.

Van Buren (born Maarten Van Buren) was the only president (so far) for whom English was the second learned language.  Dutch was his first learned language, and the language he spoke at home with his family.  Van Buren was the first president to be born after America declared independence from Britain.

You can visit the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site. His home of 21 years in Kinderhook, NY, which he called Lindenwald, is now run by the National Park Service.  Van Buren was the subject of a favorite scene of mine from the show Seinfeld - The Van Buren Boys.
