Roy Lichtenstein

Roy Lichtenstein (1923 - 1997)

Born Roy Fox Lichtenstein on October 27, 1923, in New York, NY.

He went to Ohio State University to study art. His education was interrupted for three years when he served in the Army during WWII. After the war, Lichtenstein returned to Ohio State, finished his degree, was hired as an instructor, and then earned an MFA in 1949.

Known for colorful, often humorous paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures. A Pop-Artist, Lichtenstein's works were inspired by popular culture, advertisements, comic books and comic strips. He also often reproduced famous works of art in his Lichtenstein Pop-art style.

Died on September 29, 1997, at the age of 73 in New York, NY.

Where Andy Warhol was inspired by people and items in the grocery store, Roy Lichtenstein was inspired by works on paper. Advertisements in newspapers, other artists' work, and most of all COMICS, were what got his artistic juices flowing. At first his artwork was largely disliked, he was even called the worst artist in America! But Lichtenstein's work has stood the test of time, and his pieces now sell for millions of dollars. In 2017, his painting Masterpiece, sold for $165 million dollars! The National Gallery of Art holds the largest collection of his artwork, so technically all Americans own a work of art by Roy Lichtenstein! In 2012, CBS Sunday Morning interviewed his son Mitchell to talk about the artwork and the life of Roy Lichtenstein.
