Dear LCMS Panther Families,
Thank you to those who came to Meet the Teacher on Thursday. That was the best turn out we have had in the past several years!
Please be sure to read all of the information below. It is more than usual, but there is a lot to help you and your child get ready for school.
I know several of you have submitted schedule change requests in the Google form. Please continue to be patient. The counselors are going through every request. On Monday, your child must follow the schedule that is in Skyward. If they have a hole in their schedule (for example: no 3rd period), they will report to the library for that period. If they have a duplicate class (for example: 2 PE classes), they will report to the library during the 2nd class. Otherwise, they are to follow the schedule in Skyward until they are called down to receive a schedule change. Please be aware that just requesting a change does not mean that it will happen. Almost all of our classes are full and not every class is offered every class period. Many classes are requirements and cannot be changed. Please see the Curriculum Guide for more information.
Also, the rules from last year still apply, all cell phones are to be silenced and placed in the teacher designated area. Students are NOT to be on them in any classroom without teacher direction. Additionally, if you would like for us to use a certain nickname for your child (Mike instead of Michael) please be sure to complete the Name Deviation Survey below. Likewise, in order for us to treat your child in our school clinic, please complete the School Health Services Consent. These are all state laws that went into effect last year. Thank you for your support in helping us to be compliant.
New this year is the state law requiring ALL doors and gates to be locked at all times. We will be issuing ID Access Control Cards to our students along with a lanyard. If you are a bus rider, you will need to use it to tap on and off the bus. ALL students will need their ID to access building doors. All campus doors will remain locked throughout the school day and they’ll need to use their ID to badge into the buildings during class transitions or try to catch the door from the students in front of them. DO NOT lose this ID. It is critical that they have it on them at all times.
Let's make it an amazing year!
Don't forget, Panthers always:
Practice Safety
Act Responsibly
Work Hard
Show Respect
Go Panthers! #PawsUp
Sincerely,
Dr. Melissa Laudani
Principal, Lawton Chiles MS
SCPS Families received information from our Department of School Safety & Security which shared updates due to new legislation regarding doors and gates that will require some procedural changes. Our district has already had many of these safety procedures in place for years, however, there are a few changes that you can expect to see this year to maintain the highest level of safety and security and comply with new legislation. These measures will extend to any time a student is on campus.
Impacts at Lawton Chiles Middle School
Drop-off/pick-up: Doors will open on the car ramp and the bus ramp at 9 am. Please do not drop off your child before that time. Staff members will be stationed at both points so that students can enter the school. Please do not drop off or pick up students anywhere other than the front car ramp. See the pictures below for specifics.
Access to Campus: ONLY authorized individuals will be granted access through staffed entry points. Students will be given lanyards for their ID cards and should always wear them. These cards will be used to gain access to buildings on campus. If you are visiting the front office, please ring the doorbell and wait. You will be asked to explain the purpose of your visit before the door is opened.
Events and Activities: Specific entry points will be designated and staffed for events outside regular hours. If a student is participating in a club or sport, that sponsor or coach will meet the students in the courtyard in front of their building and will escort them to their classroom/practice location.
These changes are not only important for remaining in compliance with Florida law but ensuring a safe environment for all students, staff, and visitors. We would like to ask for your patience and cooperation during this transition.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out via email at school_safety@scps.k12.fl.us. Our school is committed to the safety of our students and staff, and we appreciate the role you play in helping us work together to create a safe and vibrant campus for our students to learn, grow, and thrive.

We are still working out the logistics for some of our clubs. More info will be posted next month after teachers return.
Step 1 - Click the link below to view the list of clubs.
Step 2 - Parents must click the link for the Permission Form and give permission for their student to attend. Take a note of the date and time. These forms will be added closer to the start of the school year.
Step 3 - Students then attend the club meetings and have fun! Any student who shows up for a meeting without the parent permission will not be allowed to stay.
