Dear Parent/Guardian,
On October 21, Seminole County Public School’s Health Services in collaboration with the Seminole County Health Department will be conducting state mandated health screenings for all sixth graders at Lawton Chiles Middle School Middle School. Students will be screened for scoliosis (curvature of the spine); growth and development including height, weight, BMI (body mass index); vision; and hearing. Screening schedule can be found on SCPS Website – Health Services page.
Please complete the health screening consent form located by clicking the link below NO LATER THAN October 7. As of 9/2 - only 200 families have responded.
2022-2023 Middle School Screening Consent Form
PLEASE NOTE:
-Those children who wear glasses or contact lenses must wear them for the vision screenings if they participate.
-Scoliosis screening is done in a private setting with at least 2 school board nurses present. The student is asked to stand straight while the nurse looks at the shoulders, hips, and back for any abnormalities or asymmetry. The student may be asked to lift the shirt to mid back level for view of hips if clothing is obstructing. The student will then be asked to bend forward and down about 90 degrees while hanging arms and head down. This allows the spine to elongate and the nurse to view the spine for straightness and the back for symmetry. Any abnormal findings will be sent in writing via mail to the parent/guardian.
If you choose to exempt your child from the screenings or do not complete the required consent form by the above deadline, your child will not participate in the schools scheduled health screenings. Please remember the importance of an annual wellness visit with your healthcare provider to review the child’s growth and development, nutrition, safety, and emotional as well as physical well-being.
If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Waller at megan_waller@scps.k12.fl.us or 407-871-7037.
Thank you,
Dr. Melissa Laudani
Principal

As you start cleaning out your closets to get ready for the holidays, please consider us for donations of white Christmas lights for our Spring Showcase. Donations can be dropped off in the Front Office to Dr. Taylor's attention.
After last year's Step it Up Fundraiser, our PTSA decided to change things up this year. Last year, only 400 students participated raising over $34,000 in the fundraiser, but only $17,000 went to the PTSA. Our PTSA Board decided it would be better if 100% of the proceeds went towards their projects for our school.
So, we are asking that parents spend the same amount that you would if you were buying candles, cookies, wrapping paper or any other such items - knowing that 100% of the money is going to the school, instead of just a portion. If every family donated $15, we would beat the total amount received last year - $30 each would surpass the total raised last year!
We are halfway to paying for 3 cameras to be installed in the 3 stairways on campus for added security. We are also asking for additional funds to purchase vinyls for the Growl Grill windows and other 1st floor windows on campus (mock-up below is for the Growl Grill windows).
