Lesson 11 - Writing a Hook and Topic Sentence
Lesson 11 - Writing a Hook and Topic Sentence
Today, you will write your hook and topic sentence for each of your seven topics. You will NOT be writing the rest of the paragraph yet, just the hook and topic sentence.
1. Watch these videos.
2. Follow these hints to write your hook.
It should grab the reader and make them want to keep reading.
You can start with a surprising fact.
You can start with a question.
EXAMPLE HOOK: For the Louisiana Purchase this could be a hook: Imagine your house doubling in size overnight. Impossible? Well that is what the United States did in 1803.
3. Follow these hints to write your topic sentence.
It should include the topic.
It should be the main idea of the rest of your paragraph.
EXAMPLE TOPIC SENTENCE: For the Louisiana Purchase this could be a topic sentence: The Louisiana Purchase was a big purchase of land that helped our nation grow.
4. So my first two sentences for the Louisiana Purchase would be:
Imagine your house doubling in size overnight. Impossible? Well that is what the United States did in 1803. The Louisiana Purchase was a big purchase of land that helped our nation grow.
5. Write a hook and topic sentence for each of your seven topics using your Westward Expansion Template. Start on page 3 with your first topic. Than go to page 5 for your second topic, and so on until you have a hook and topic sentence for all seven topics. REMEMBER: You are not writing the whole paragraph today. You are just getting the "opener" (hook and topic sentence) done.
You will have 1 day to complete all seven of your hooks and topic sentences.
