When I was young and playing soccer, I could not effectively use my left foot to control the ball. I made it my mission and promised myself I would get better. I practiced almost everyday trying to only use my left foot to move the ball around and kick it. It was hard work, time consuming, and difficult. I wanted to just stop and do other fun things, but I made myself a promise and I was determined to not give up. After about a month, I started to see improvement and this gave me even more motivation to keep it up. I never got to a point where I was as good with my left foot as I was with my right, but I did improve significantly.
Can you think of a time you worked to get better at something?
How did you do it? What strategies did you use?
This is what I am asking you to do during reading workshop - to be AMBITIOUS and HARDWORKING.
You might have to practice, spend long periods of time doing something, repetition, redoing, asking for help, etc.
We will go into more specifics later, but basically we will meet for a lesson, than you will spend the bulk of the time reading and responding to reading.
Now, think about what you are good at as a reader?
What do you need to work on?
What can you do to make what you want to improve happen?
Share with someone what makes you a good reader, how you want to grow as a reader this year, and how you will make it happen.
You can read for the remainder of the time (about 30 minutes).
