Today, we will select two characters from two different mentor texts and compare them.
Central Ideas When Writing About Characters
What theories do you have about your character?
Has your character acted “out of character?” Explain.
How has your character changed over the time of the story?
What specific language could be used to describe your character?
What does the character want?
What are some of the obstacles that have been getting in the way?
How does the character respond to those obstacles?
What qualities does the character use to reach his/her goal?
What did knowing this information do to lift your understanding of the story?
Let's look at an example.
Now you try it. Pick two characters from two different mentor texts and compare them using the above questions and the Comparing Characters Doc. When you are finished, you can try it again with two other characters. Remember to make a copy and save it in your writing folder.
When you are finished with the assignment, here is what you can do:
Just keep writing.
Keep adding seeds.
Add to a already started seed.
Decide to take a seed through the writer’s process.
Reread your writing.
Edit your writing.
Work with a writing partner (with permission).
NEVER say "I am finished"
You need to be writing for a minimum of 30 minutes.
