Read the What If Poem by Shel Silverstein
What do you notice about the poem?
Ever two lines rhyme. (mostly)
It has an AA, BB, CC, etc pattern. (mostly)
It is funny.
It is talking about what he fears might happen.
The first What If is something that could actually happen and someone might really be worried about. The second What If is silly and can't really happen. (mostly)
Example: First What If - What if I flunk the test. - this could be a real concern. Second What If - What if green hair grows on my chest. - this is silly and not a real concern.
You are now going to write your own What If poem. Your poem will be based just on worries you might have about school. They do not have to be worries you actually have, but worries any kid can have about school.
Using the template handout, you will write 10 what ifs. Remember the first one will be something serious that could happen and the second will be something silly that can't really happen. So, you will have 5 pairs of What Ifs that go together.
Every two lines have to rhyme.
For example I might do:
What if I get lost in the hall.
What if I shrink and get small.
After you have finished your What If lines and checked your work, open up the Google Doc from the assignment called - My What If Poem.
Type the title at the top (What If) with your name under it (by:).
Next type the first four lines of the actual poem.
Now type your 10 What if lines.
End with the actual last two lines from the poem.
You can play around with the font/size/color. Just make sure it is readable and takes up most of the page, but make sure it fits on one page.
Add a picture that has to do with the poem.
Turn it in.
