We are training to become powerful readers! You are keeping track of your thinking while reading, but what do you do when you lose meaning? Or maybe you just don’t understand something as deeply as you want to.
There are so many things you can do when the meaning starts to break down. 5th graders read some really complicated texts!
Strategies for Readers to Use When the Text is More Complicated
Go back and Reread
Solve "tricky" words
Make meaning of unknown words
Read the challenging part aloud
Read the next few sentences to see if it helps you make sense of it
Use Post-It notes
Read the first three paragraphs of Thank You, Ma'am
What does her walking alone at 11:00 at night mean?
“The large woman simply turned around and kicked him right square in his blue-jeaned sitter.” What happened here? What does this tell you about her?
“She bent down enough to permit him to stoop and pick up her purse.” What does this look like?
Language choices- “ain’t”, “Yes’m” What does this tell us about the characters?
Now you try it.
Look at paragraphs 21 and 37. Reread those sections and be ready to discuss the details from the text and your thoughts.
What new understanding did you make?
Use these strategies to help you
You can read for the remainder of the time.
