I remember when I was little I REALLY wanted a kitten, and it seemed like kittens were everywhere -- on commercials, in every book I saw, at all my friends' houses. Of course there weren't ACTUALLY more kittens than usual, but the thing I was experiencing in my life -- wanting a kitten -- changed the way I was seeing the world.
This can be true with songs too. Often, we have ideas about popular songs, not just from the song themselves but because of what we are experiencing in our lives at the time. After a fight with someone you care about, every song sounds sad.
