Writing Workshop - Research Based Argument Essay - Self Selected Topic - Lesson 6
Today, you will focus on the important parts to include in an introduction and a conclusion, and continue to fill out your argument essay pillar.
First, let's think about what makes an introduction good.
We already know to include:
A hook. This can be something catchy or surprising. It is what makes the reader want to keep reading.
A Thesis. This is your statement of your argument. It should be very clear and explicit.
The three reasons. These are your three main ideas supporting your thesis.
Something new we are going to add to our introduction is:
Include information about the author (you). Who are you? Why do you care about this issue? Adding information that lets the reader get to know you helps you persuade them to agree with your argument.
Now, let's think what makes a conclusion good.
Restate your thesis. Remind the reader what your argument is. Remember to state it in a different way.
Restate your three reasons. Remind the reader what the three reasons are that support your argument.
Include the counterclaim and rebuttal. preemptively strike down something the reader might be thinking that does not agree with your argument.
Something new we are going to add to our conclusion is:
Emphasize why this matters. Tell the reader why this is important. Tell them why they should care. Tell the reader the difference it could make.
Call to action. Now that you have the reader convinced and they agree with you, what do you want them to do? Tell the reader what they can do to help with this issue. What action should they take?
