Today, we are going to continue crafting our stories by introducing and developing the problem.
Let's look at the first line on the top of page 4. Notice how the author shifts our attention from the characters and setting by using the phrase "Then one August afternoon...". This is a strategy you can use to move the story along and introduce the problem.
Next, the author goes on to develop the problem through action, description, and dialogue. Let's read the rest of the page.
Action - "My father's friend, Nicky, hit a ball over my father's head...".
Description - "...big, leafy tomato plant. The tomatoes were round and red and ripe just about the size of a baseball...".
Dialogue - "Boy, I'd like to see Nicky's face if I threw a tomato instead...".
Notice the suspense is building... What will happen next?
From here, the author explodes the moment by highlighting action. Let's read page 5 and focus on the vivid action verbs.
Also, did you spot any author's craft on this page?
Use the third section of your theme based organizer and sections three and four of your story diamond to continue your story by introducing the problem and exploded the moment. You are only writing "the middle" today. If you finish, try different ways to explode the moment.
Remember to:
use action
use description
use dialogue
link your problem to the theme
