Have you ever watched a movie or read a book more than once? The first time you see or read something, you get a basic understanding of it. However, the second or third time you see it, you are likely to catch something you missed the first time or see something in a new way. That idea holds true for reading, too.
Close reading will help you develop new and deeper understandings about the books you are going to read this year.
Today I want to teach you a new reading ritual. All rituals involve a process or steps. This ritual involves three steps:
deciding what to carefully look for
finding what these things have in common, like a pattern
then stepping back and seeing what new understanding this gives you about the text.
What you need to understand about close reading is that it means you will be going back and rereading a piece of text more than once. It won't be pages and pages or all of what you read in a reading session, but you'll need to be comfortable with the idea of rereading a portion of text.
As you go off to do your own reading today, think about the idea of rereading a part of your book. Whether it is a part you really like or a part you don't understand, give rereading a try and notice what it brings you.
You can read for the remainder of the time. Do not forget to do an entry in your - Keeping Track of my Reading.
