We also need to look at the emotions that a character feels while in the setting. This will help us further understand the character.
Let's focus specifically on details about how Emmy feels in the setting. We’re going to go back to a few pages in chapters 1 to 3. However, this time, we’ll be looking for different details, details that indicate her emotions in her hometown of Quincy.
We’re going to look at another part of the text. Pay close attention to any details that clue you in to how Emmy is feeling in this setting; things that she sees, her inner thoughts, and her dialogue can all be clues as to what kind of emotions she’s having. Let's read from the bottom of page 35 to 36.
As you read, continue to pay attention to the physical details of the setting, but also think about how the setting is making the character feel on an emotional level. Does the setting create feelings of happiness and safety, or is it one of fear and the unknown? Always think about the setting as an emotional space.
