Writer's Workshop - Launch Lesson 9
Today, we are going to learn when you should start a new paragraph in your story.
There are three main reasons to start a new paragraph.
When you are moving to a different part of the story.
When you are moving to a different time in the story.
When a different character is talking.
Let's look at an example.
I think the first two are pretty straight forward, so today I want to focus on the third one, dialog.
Not only do we need to think about when to start a new paragraph when we are writing dialog, but we also have to think about proper punctuation, including quotation marks.
Here are some rules to remember when using dialog...
Indent when a new person speaks.
Put quotation marks around what is being said aloud.
Capitalize the first word in a quotation.
Put end punctuation inside the quotation marks.
Start a new paragraph when a new person is speaking.
Go back into your writing piece and review your dialog and paragraphs. Make any changes that you think you need to make.
