Writer's Workshop - Launch Lesson 2
The first several days of Writer's Workshop will be spent of discussing the procedures and expectations. We will also be gathering some seed ideas during this time.
First we are going to create a new folder and file in Google Drive.
Open up your Google Drive.
Go to your 5th grade 22-23 folder. If you have not created it yet do so now.
Click on New.
Click on Folder.
Name it Writer's Workshop
Now you are in the Writer's Workshop folder you just created.
Click New.
Click Google Doc.
At the top left where it says Untitled Document, type in Seed Ideas.
That's it for now.
So, what is a seed idea?
Listen as I read p.31-40 from A Writer's Notebook by Ralph Fletcher.
Seeds do not get titles. They are not complete stories, but ideas instead. Not all seeds will get published. They will be used to help you think of and start writing pieces.
Seeds do not have to be complete sentences or paragraphs. Seeds can include diagrams, drawings, maps, and graphs.
Some seeds might be really short and some might be a bit longer, but remember they never are like published pieces.
Your seed is your idea, and like a seed that can grow into a beautiful flower; your seed can grow into a beautiful published piece of writing.
Now, let's try to add some seed ideas. You will use the Google Doc you created earlier. Make sure to date each seed. Multiple seeds can go on one page. Just leave a couple of spaces in between each one and remember to date each one even if it is the same date. This Google Doc is where you will be writing your seeds for the entire year.
Start by adding this list to your Google Doc. We will add more ideas to it later, so make sure to leave some space before you write your first seed.
Here are some seed starters for you to try:
Draw a self portrait and write about it.
Draw a family portrait and write about it.
Write about something interesting you saw.
Write about your name. How did you get it?
Write about a pet's name. How did they get it?
Spend the rest of the writing time adding seeds. You can do each one or you can do one several times. For example, if you have more than one pet. You must write the whole time. Just keep adding seeds. You also do not have to only stick to the seed starters, come up with some seeds of your own.
