Homework
The school committee recognizes that education research shows a positive correlation between meaningful and purposeful homework and student achievement as students move through the grade levels (Cooper, 2006). Generally, homework should be designed to help students work toward proficiency and make connections to the learning in the classroom. Homework also should provide students with the opportunity to learn and practice an array of work habits needed to be successful for school, and ultimately, the world of work. While homework can provide an opportunity for a student to work towards proficiency, it should be viewed as one of many outside learning experiences, along with other enrichment opportunities that help to promote physical, social, emotional, and cultural well-being.
Guidelines for Effective Homework Assignments
Teachers should provide guidance in study skills to prepare students for independent work.
Homework should be relevant to classroom learning, with a clearly stated purpose and guidance for successful completion. Assignment instructions should be clear and time should be given to address possible misunderstandings.
Students and families should be made aware of how homework relates to the assessment and scoring of students’ overall Habits of Work.
Homework assignments should be created and adjusted appropriately for the grade level, developmental level, and instructional needs of each student.
Individual Education Plan (IEP) requirements and/or the special identified individual needs of students will supersede this policy.
General Guidelines for Homework Assignments
Students’ homework expectations should be considerate of students’ overall course and work load.
