ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CLASS SIZE

The Lewiston School Committee recognizes that class size impacts student achievement and establishes the following guidelines for regular elementary school classrooms:

Grade Level Maximum Class Size

Pre-Kindergarten 16

Kindergarten 20

1st-6th Grade 22

The pre-kindergarten numbers are not to be exceeded. If the kindergarten numbers are exceeded because of budgetary or space limitations, additional educators (either educational technicians or additional teachers) shall be added to the impacted schools to ensure that the number of students per educator do not exceed a 20 to 1 ratio.

The School Committee recognizes that class sizes may differ from school to school based upon student needs, enrollment and physical space. The 1st-6th grade guideline may also be exceeded due to budgetary constraints.

The Superintendent shall make one or more reports to the School Committee each year on elementary class size and any additional resources needed to reduce class sizes accordingly.
