HEALTH INSURANCE FOR EMPLOYEES ON SABBATICAL LEAVE 

The collective bargaining agreement between the Lewiston School Committee and the Lewiston Education Association provides for sabbatical leave for qualified employees as determined by the Superintendent. The present agreement sets compensation at the rate of half pay for the duration of the leave, but is unclear on the cost of health insurance. 

Maine law reads that ―in the absence of or to the extent not inconsistent with any applicable collective bargaining agreement, the School Committee may establish these terms and conditions. Accordingly, the School Committee sets its contribution for the health insurance of an employee on sabbatical as the same provided to full-time teachers. 

This policy will be reviewed annually beginning during the 2015-16 school year prior to the Superintendent making any sabbatical determinations so that consideration can be given to any possible budgetary constraints.
