Whilst library welcome bags for teachers are great advocacy and a lovely thought, you should not feel obliged to provide one. They take time and can be reasonably expensive, especially if you are catering for all staff.

A cake, some biscuits, a fruit bowl or chocolates on your staff room table with a list of library dates - specific to YOUR library - is enough.

A simple alternatives such as single wrapped chocolate or muesli bar with a bookmark and your library dates is also a reminder about you, the library and is solid advocacy.

Please bear in mind that you do not have to do everything you see other TLs doing. It's a tricky enough job balancing teaching with admin. Be realistic, don't fall into library envy, be flexible with your planning and, above all, be kind to yourself if some things don't work the way you'd hoped.

We live and learn :)

Beginning of year book care activity prior to borrowing, inspired by @littlelibrarylearners

Students sort items from a mystery box into tubs labelled as Do’s and Don’ts. Items in the Do’s box includes library bag, bookmark and sanitiser (to represent clean hands). Don’ts include water bottle, markers, image of pets, baby doll (to represent younger sibling), play dough (to represent range of sticky toys including slime), scissors, glue and chip packet (to represent all food).

Younger students then complete the book care worksheet and older students create a book care poster highlighting one of the care concepts (changing the don’t into positive wording).

My teacher bags contain tea and coffee bags, biscuits, chocolates, handcream or merit stickers for my male colleagues. I've also included a small non-alcoholic cocktail mixer - post SDD?

Emily Williams: St George's Basin PS

Use Emily's idea and Canva, and create your own welcome back bookmark. Each teacher will receive a CANVA created bookmark (attached), pen, tea bag, chocolate and tea light candle, with a note saying:  With love from your teacher librarian and the quote "A Trained Librarian is a Powerful Search Engine With a Heart." Sarah McIntyre.

Check out Emily's AH PD session on using Canva, and share your amazing creations here!

Inspired by Emily, my back to school gift to our staff will include two bookmarks (purchased - I know, letting the TL team down but a time saver!!), tea and coffee bag, chocolate, probably more chocolate, and a list of resources I have in the library, including but not limited to:

Updated with a second page added, inspired once again by Emily Williams!

ALIA bookmarks are free downloads from their website. The subscription logins are included to make it super easy for staff to know how to use the resources. I will also include a brief info leaflet on Oliver (I have put shortcut links on the news page for all subscriptions there) and Library Link App. We moved over to Oliver Term 3 - 2020-so have not had whole school staff meetings to get this info across the staff- so I want to include these.

This is our take on a small gift/activity to give staff at the start of the term. A bookmark and a flyer encouraging them to download and make use of the Library Link app; something I think is definitely undervalued!

For the students

Gina Krohn: Glenfield PS

I'm really going to try and have a theme each month. The idea is to highlight new and older books in the library, and having a dedicated week at the end of the month gives me time to pull books from the shelf and make a display (well, that's the plan).

I'm hoping to generate interest, borrowing and discussion with visual displays, competitions and LOTS of book talk. First up is Fact Week - and an introduction to Dewey! The books in the poster are in our collection. Other themes will include mystery, adventure, old books, cartoons, crime, science, fantasy, humour, sport and kindness.
