Rachel a Cos: St Gregory’s College Junior School
For Worse Things, I had my year 6’s examine the visual aspects of character on the cover after reading chapter one then they created their own cover piece referencing their personalities.
Every Country’s Most Famous Mythical Creature: the Sasquatch. Baba Yaga. Curupira. They are all bizarre creatures who have been widely claimed to exist ...

I always provide many competitions for the students leading up to Book Week so they have opportunities to win a free book at the Book Fair. This will be one of my new ones this year- design your own toilet roll character.
I’m doing all of the characters from Charlie & Choc factory as inspiration
Other comps include story writing, make a bookmark, book in a jar, colouring in, film a mini movie or mime a music video, design Book Week poster & because this year I’m twisting everything around Willy Wonka they can invent a new sweet treat.
To make this awesome giant fairy floss, Michelle used two plant stands, painted them white and covered them with chicken wire. She then covered them with pink material for the base, and then just wrapped pink tulle around and around and around. Add a bit of sparkle, and voila!

Here's something I'm doing with the staff at my school to have a little bit of fun with the Book Week theme. Feel free to use it if you like it.
Hi Everyone,
You've all heard of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?...but have you heard of Where in the World are the Kingy Staff?
This year's Book Week theme is Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds. I would love to make a display using photos from all the Kingy Staff to support this theme (a bit like I did with the Guess Who? display in the library last year). Here is what I would like you to email to me:
• A photo of you with a famous landmark or scene in the background. The kids (and staff) will have to guess "where in the world" you are. It could be a photo of you ANYWHERE in the world, e.g. you standing in front of the Eiffel Tower, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Disneyland, Taj Mahal, Colosseum, Great Wall of China, Uluru, diving in the Great Barrier Reef, or even at Kingy Creek! It can be local or on the other side of the world.
So start digging through all your old travel pics and send them through to me ASAP please.
Thanks so much for joining in the fun.
Shelfie to selfie: staff members shared a picture of their personal bookshelf and a selfie. They had to leave a little clue in both pictures to help the students, eg My selfie has my bird on my shoulder and in the shelfie, the bird was sitting on the bookshelf. Another teacher took her selfie with her glasses on the top of her head and these glasses we on the bookshelf. The students were not initially told about the clues to look for, this was left until closer to the end. Students took an 'answer sheet' which had the staff members' names and they matched it to the bookshelf number - the display in the library had a number next to each shelfie.
I have pulled all the notables we have at school off the shelf. I have made a bookmark for each book with stars on it. I have made a display and put the bookmarks in the books. The idea is the student borrows, rates the book (out of 3 stars) brings the book and bookmark back so someone else can borrow and rate and at the end of the term / beginning of next term see if what we vote for and what gets shortlisted matches.
Gillain has shared her bookmark template:
Do a story sale. This is where students set up little stalls to sell things, eg Miss Muffett's spiders. Bad example but you get the idea. Harry Potter's wands. Kids make items and sell to raise money for something special in the library. Have to dress in character to sell. Hansel and Gretel's gingerbread cookies. They can be as creative as they like.
We see that although children live in different countries, may look different and speak different languages, the joys and discoveries of childhood are universal.

This year I’m doing a “where in the world are our teachers?” guessing competition.
Teachers send me pics of somewhere around the world they have visited and students try to match to the teachers’ names.
So far I’ve collected some amazing photos from all around the world. The kids are going to love it!
Imagine that you have found a new animal when exploring a NEW WORLD or OTHER WORLD. Create an entry for it in our Encyclopaedia of Newly Discovered Animals
Note: this is to be printed as A3
Travel display in progress. Signage to come. Children will try to match happy snaps to countries and ask teachers questions. To promote this activity one teacher will be the secret traveller and the first child to ask a question of this teacher will win a prize.
Old Worlds (history, biographies, etc), New Worlds (sci-fi, fantasy, anything fiction, etc) and Other Worlds (space, the ocean, plants, human body, microbes ....). I'm hoping this will give me scope to explore lots of NF and increase students' general knowledge/expose them to amazing information that gets their brains engaged and spark some interest in things they haven't encountered before.

I'm doing three boards - old, new and other. Old will be a scroll, new will be Minecraft/video game themed, other worlds will be a TARDIS (borrowed from a colleague) with signposts to various fantasy places. Students will be given recommendation slips to write short book reviews and stick them on/in whichever display suits the book. Other students can then come along and pick a world to read a book from if they are unsure.
If you have more information about this, please email tlccin2018@gmail.com
One of my teachers gave me an idea. Ask the students to send pictures of themselves reading in unusual places.-up a tree, under a blanket and make a PowerPoint to show them.
Teacher swap.
Teachers go to a different class to present their favourite book however they like - art, drama, etc. The kids love it and teachers do too. This year I plan on having teachers work in rotation, rather than just having one appearance. Last year, the teachers chose if they wanted to swap and who with and when. It was totally voluntary so the keen ones did it and everyone involved thought it was a great experience.
I'll also be doing a scavenger hunt round the school with laminated images. This was extremely popular last year, when I got lots of clip art animals, different size images and about four to an A4 page which I laminated. Each image had a number and I hid them around the school, eg stuck with blutak to windows, tree trunks, etc but visible from paths so no student went out of bounds. The students were told how many there were and had to write the animal next to the number on a sheet. Or they could just find them. K-1 went with teachers and 2-6 went out as classes whenever it suited the teacher but roamed freely. They were really well behaved and I only had one picture go missing towards the end of the day.
