Diana Brien: Gregory Hills PS
I have a parenting covering program in place which works well for me.
I send out an ‘expression of interest’ note via SeeSaw to get some names of parents who’d like to volunteer.
If they’re newbies, I send home just 5 books to see how they do!!
Once I know they can cover they get added to my volunteer list.
I use green Woolies recycle bags and have them numbered, so I know which parent has been given which bag and then I put 10 books with contact in each bag.
When my pile of books to cover grows, I send out a SeeSaw message to my parents to check they are ok to have some covering and I send them home.
Once you have a bank of regulars, it’s a pretty easy system.
Because the bags are numbered it’s easy to chase up any that are outstanding. I keep a checklist of the bag # taken by each parent.
Some parents ask for more than 10 books so I just send two bags.
Tip - sending home a nice note with a Freddo Frog is also nice to let the parents know they’re appreciated. And a small gift at the end of the year.
Also, pre-Covid I had “coffee and covering” afternoons twice a term (when I had my own RFF 2-3 one afternoon, no longer… ). This was a great way to get some parents into the library and just chat while we covered.
I encouraged the boss to pop in to say hi too.
Good community liaising as well as covering lessons for those who required it!!
