This resource comes recommended by TLs for those that have half hour lessons - and lots of art and craft supplies available!

Almost everything used was upcycled from weeded novels and picture book and the images were all taken from illustrated editions and blown up using my usual ‘puzzle method’. I don’t use the poster option on the printer as it does not allow for any overlap and is less forgiving. I chose these particular books as for me, the theme conjured images of characters finding themselves in magical, faraway lands. Alice, Dorothy and the Pevensies all believed themselves to be dreaming with their eyes open.

Engagement ideas
Use the shortlist as the basis for student engagement
Kathleen Marreiros:
If you are looking for an interactive book response to the CBCA picture book shortlisted book 'Iceberg', why not try the following:
1. Get shimmery curtaining (I sourced mine at Kmart)
2. After reading the book 'Iceberg', students research about the life which is in Antarctic waters and either create a factual page or realistic drawing of one of these creatures.
3. Students cut out and stick this behind the Icy curtain and invite other students to gently see what lies beneath the surface.
Relatively easy to set up and the display is able to be added to over time.

Hello, here is my digital breakout I made for stage 3. The aim is to get them interested and have a clear favourite for the winning book and ultimately to want to read some or all in entirety for pleasure. The process is simple, start at the top section and work your way down. Each section for the books as a new page- Meet the Author, to provide background info, blurb, set the scene, provide hooks and provide links to further info for keen students. The first code is from the Welcome page -clue which was- Who did the art work for the poster? Codes in order for reference - all case sensitive
to open Dragon Skin-Jasmine Seymour
to open The Detective's-little fella
to open Huda & Me - RMS Aquitania
to open Glasshouse - Lebanon
to open Exit - New Land
to open Rabbit- surreal scary
to open You be the judge- flowers
to open Breakout - Book Week
Feel free to change or adapt to suit if it works for you.
Happy reading!

Bookmarks!
Students design their own bookmark based on the cover or their personal response to the content.
Students redesign the cover. It could be a pre and post reading activity, followed by a discussion exploring the differences between the two.
Redesign the cover
Create a CBCA Book Club
One student, one book - read and write a review for your school newsletter/social media page.
In groups, create a board game that demonstrates an understanding of character, plot, theme. Groups swap and play multiple games - and so are exposed to multiple books!
