Lesson 6: Interior (Indoor) Scene with Tertiary Colors

Objective: To have the children create an interior scene with tertiary colors.

Vocabulary:

color wheel - A chart that shows primary, secondary, and sometimes tertiary colors in order.

interior - An inside (indoor) space or room

primary colors - The colors red, yellow, and blue. They are mixed together to make other colors on the color wheel.

secondary colors - The colors orange, green, and violet. Each one is created by combining two primary colors

tertiary colors - Colors that are created by mixing a primary color with a secondary color. Also called intermediate colors.

The Color Wheel

Artists may use a color wheel to help them plan artworks. Look at the color wheel. Find the colors red, blue, and yellow. These are primary colors. They can be mixed to make any other color on the color wheel. Now look at Woman Pouring by Robert Delaunay. Where do you see primary colors in this painting

Secondary colors are made by mixing two primary colors together. Orange, violet (purple), and green are secondary colors. Find them on the color wheel. Red and yellow mixed together make orange. Which two primary colors mixed together make violet? What about green? Point out the secondary colors in the painting Woman Pouring.

Now find blue and violet on the color wheel. The color between them is blue-violet. Tertiary colors are made by mixing a primary color with a secondary color that is next to it on the color wheel. Name the other tertiary colors on the color wheel. Tertiary colors are named with the primary color first followed by the secondary color.

Materials:

White Paper Pencils, Tempera Paints, Paint Brushes, Water Bowl

Think about important moments in your life that took place inside (indoors). Think about why the event took place in that room and show why this room is important to you. Create a sketch.
Check list:
- Create a picture of an interior (indoor) space that is important to you.
- Use all six tertiary colors somewhere in your image.

Use a pencil to draw a scene from a room you know well.
Decide where you will use tertiary colors. Look at the color wheel to help you mix colors.

Challenge: Accordian Color Wheel

Create an accordion color wheel with a 36" x 4" paper folded into 12 rectangles, repeat paint the same object 12 times with monochromatic color schemes.
