Lesson 12: Patterned Print Wrapping Paper

Objective: To have the children use sponges and paint to create a print with an AB pattern.

Vocabulary:

pattern - A design made up of repeated lines, shapes, colors, or forms.

print - An artwork made by pressing an object covered with wet color against a flat surface.

Patterns in Art

Look at Eclipse by Alma Woodsey Thomas. Can you find a pattern anywhere in the artwork? What do you notice about the rings of color in the painting? How did the artist show an eclipse?

Pattern
An AB Pattern is when two different objects repeats over and over.

Studio Time: Patterned Print Wrapping Paper

Materials:

Butcher Paper or Large Paper, Found Objects for Printing (spools, forks, cookie cutters, and blocks), Tempera Paint, Paint Trays, Sponges, Newspaper or Plastic, Smocks or Old Shirts

Plan

View available geometric shaped sponges. Brainstorm AB patterns, think about both shape and color. Cover work area with newsprint of plastic, and have children wear old shirts or smocks to protect their clothing. Place a sponge in each paint tray and pour paint onto it.
Check list:
- Use sponges to paint objects.
- Press objects onto paper to create AB patterns

Create

You will be making patterned-print wrapping paper. Think about how you want your pattern to look.
(* Have a bucket of water and towels so that children can rinse and wipe off objects between use.)
Select an object and place it on the sponge to coat one side with paint.
Press the object onto the paper to begin making print patterns.

Challenge: Fingerprint Snake

Draw the head of a snake. Use your thumbs and two colors of leftover paint (or markers) to create the body of the snake with an AB pattern. Complete the picture by adding a setting with markers.

*AB pattern paper chain if the class is short on time.
