coil - To arrange or wind something in a spiral or sequence of rings.
pottery - Objects such as bowls made from clay and hardened.
symbol - A picture, word, figure, or object that stands for something or represents an idea.
variety - A design principle used to add interest to an artwork by using many different objects and art elements (line, shape, color, form, etc...).
A symbol is a shape that stands for an idea. In ancient times, people used symbols instead of words to send messages to one another. Look at the symbols on the ancient artwork in Egyptian hieroglyphics by Unknown Artist. What do you think they might stand for? Artists today may also use symbols in their artworks.
The painted sun on the jug in Sun Ray, Double-Handled Lotus Jug by Clarice Cliff might be a symbol for warmth or light.
Artists create variety in artworks by using contrasting lines, shapes, and colors. Variety can make an artwork more interesting. What contrasting colors and lines did the artist use to show variety in Sun Ray, Double-Handled Lotus Jug.
