Lesson 26: Clay Coil Pot

Objective: To have the children create a clay coil pot with symbols and variety.

Vocabulary:

coil - To arrange or wind something in a spiral or sequence of rings.

pottery - Objects such as bowls made from clay and hardened.

symbol - A picture, word, figure, or object that stands for something or represents an idea.

variety - A design principle used to add interest to an artwork by using many different objects and art elements (line, shape, color, form, etc...).

A symbol is a shape that stands for an idea. In ancient times, people used symbols instead of words to send messages to one another. Materials:

Sketchbooks, Pencils, Clay, paper Bags, Carving Tools

Plan

Think of some symbols that tell about you or something that is important to you. Sketch these symbols.
Check list:
- Create a coil pot decorated with symbols.
- Use different lines and shapes to show variety.

Create

Make a clay coil by rolling the clay into a long "snake-like" form.
Use the coil to create layers and build up your coil pot.

3. Carve symbols and lines onto the sides of your pot. Use different symbols and lines to create variety.

Photograph and Submit your work on Google Classroom.

Photograph sketches as well as completed artwork.

Create a clay tile about a fond memory using additive and subtractive methods then complete with paint when dry.
