medium or media - the different consumable materials or supplies that an artist uses to create an artwork.
pattern - A design made up of repeated lines, shapes, colors, or forms.
tapestry - A type of weaving that has colorful designs in it.
weaving - An artwork made by lacing together (placing over then under) fibers such as yarn, thread, or strips of fabric. Rugs and baskets are kinds of weaving.

An artist can choose from a variety of materials to create an artwork. Some artworks are made of fiber. Fibers are interlaced, or woven together, to create a weaving, or cloth.
Patterns in Weavings
Look at Traditional shawl by Unknown Artist and African kente cloth (detail) by Unknown Artist. What kinds of lines, shapes, and colors do you see in each one? When lines, shapes, or colors are repeated, they create a pattern. How are the patterns in Traditional shawl and African kente cloth (detail) alike? How are they different?
The word "kente" comes from the word "kenten," which means "basket." Notice that the pattern in the cloth looks like the pattern in a basket.

Look at Chinese Emperor's Twelve Symbol Robe by Unknown Artist. The robe is an example of a tapestry from China. A tapestry is a type of weaving that has colorful designs or scenes in it. Many tapestries are heavy and are hung on walls. Some are used in clothing. How is this robe like others you have seen? How is it different?

Pull some of the strands out of a piece of burlap, create open areas.
2. Measure and cut several pieces of yarn about an inch or so longer that the width of the burlap. Weave the yarn in and out of the strands of burlap.
3. After weaving several pieces of yarn, pinch the pieces together to create a tighter weave.
