Lesson 15: Patterned Texture Collage

Objective: To have the children create a multimedia collage using textured materials with repetition, rhythm, and pattern.

Vocabulary:

collage - An artwork made by gluing bits of paper, fabric, scraps, photographs, or other materials to a flat surface.

multimedia - a variety of artistic media.

pattern - A design made up of repeated lines, shapes, colors, or forms.

repetition - the use of lines, shapes, colors, or forms more than once.

rhythm - Repeating art elements (dots, lines, shapes, forms, space, textures, colors, values, and time) in various ways or the sense of movement created by repeated art elements.

tactile (actual) texture - The way a surface of a real object feels when you touch it. Smooth, rough, soft, hard, and furry are words that describe tactile textures.

texture - The way something feels (tactile texture) or the way a picture appears (visual texture).

Look closely at Bowl-shaped bronze vessel by Unknown Artist. What details do you see first in this artwork? Which parts have the clearest patterns? Where did the artist use texture?

Tactile (Actual) Texture
Tactile (Actual) texture is the way a surface of a real object feels when you touch it. Smooth, rough, soft, hard, and furry are words that describe tactile textures. All objects we can touch have tactile texture.

Studio Time: Patterned Texture Collage

Materials:

Oaktag or Cardboard, Textured Materials (corrugated cardboard, seeds, feathers, leaves, foil, cotton, etc...), Old Magazines or Newspapers, Scissors, Cotton Swabs, Craft Sticks, Glue, Boxes

Plan

Gather, view, and touch different textured materials. Think about how you will create repetition, rhythm, and pattern.
Check list:
- Create a collage with repetitions, rhythms, and patterns by gluing materials on to a surface

Create

Select images from magazines and glue down to create repetition.
Draw a shape in different sizes and colors to create rhythm.
Select textured objects and glue down to to make textured patterns.

Challenge: Class Collage

Create a class collage having each child choose a single material to add.
