Lesson 12: Patterned Stand-up Animal

Objective: To have children create a pattern of colors on an animals that stands up.

Vocabulary:

pattern - A design made up of repeated lines, shapes, colors, or forms.

three-dimensional (3D) - Having length, width, and depth, such as a form.

visual (implied) texture - The way a flat picture or artwork looks, as if you could feel it.

Colors Make Patterns

What do the artworks show? Point to and say the colors that make up each pattern.

Each fish in Fish Print by Heather looks the same. Each fish is a print, or a copy of an artwork. One way to make a print is to cut out a shape. Press the shape into paint and then onto paper over and over.

Studio Time: Patterned Stand-up Animal

Materials:

Construction Paper, Scissors, Sponges (or cardboard), Tempera paints, Clothes Pins

Plan

Think about the shape of your favorite animal.
Check list:
- Fold a paper.
- Draw and cut out an animal shape.
- Print a color pattern on to the stand-up animal.

Create

Fold a large sheet of paper in half. Draw and cut out an animal.
* Do no cut along the fold, so the animal can stand.

2. Cut out one shape a few times from a sponge or cardboard. Print a pattern of colors.

Challenge: Stand-Up Art

Create a three part self-standing of a thing that has patterns and/or rhythm.
