layering - A construction technique where one object is placed over another.
mola - An artwork made by sewing together layers of brightly colored cloth.
pattern - A design made up of repeated lines, shapes, colors, or forms.
The Mola panel by Unknown Artist shows a cloth panel called a mola. The Cuna people of Panama have been making molas for more than on hundred years. The colorful panels often show famous scenes. This mola shows a moon landing. What details do you see?
Artists make molas by sewing together layers of cloth. Each layer is a different color. Look at the edges of the spacecraft in the Mola panel. What shape did the artist repeat to make a pattern? What other patterns do you see?

Find a picture of a bird you like. Draw the shape of the bird in three different sizes. Cut out the shapes.
Check list:
- Draw an outline of a bird in three different sizes.
- Layer cutouts to create a mola.
Set aside one color of felt material for the bottom layer of your mola.
Use marker to trace each shape onto a different color of felt material.
3. Cut out each shape from the center.
4. Glue the piece with the smallest cutout onto your bottom layer first. Glue down the piece with the largest cutout last.
