Lesson 26: Non-Objective String Painting

Objective: To have children create an non-objective painting that shows variety.

Vocabulary:

medium or media - the different consumable materials or supplies that an artist uses to create an artwork.

non-objective - Relating to a kind of abstract artwork that does not show recognizable objects.

tool - A device that helps to complete a task.

variety - A design principle used to add interest to an artwork by using many different objects and art elements (line, shape, color, form, etc...).

Look at Bird Tree by Unknown Artist. Do you thin that the title "Bird Tree" tells a main idea for this artwork? Why or Why not? How did the artist make the birds in Bird Tree different.

Studio Time: Non-Objective String Painting

Materials:

Large Sheets of Paper, Tempera Paints, Long Pieces of String or Yarn, Newspaper or Plastic, Foil Pans, Smocks or Old Shirts

Plan

Think about when you have tried something new, such as when you have tried a new tool or device. Often times an artist will experiment with a tool to figure out how to use it.
Check list:
- Explore a new tool for making art in a variety of ways.
- Create a non-objective artwork.

Create

Use a string as a tool to paint. Use it to splash, swing, trail, drip or invent your own way to paint onto paper.
Dip the pieces of string into paint and transfer the paint to paper. Try turning the paper while painting or use a different way of getting the paint onto the paper with each color you use.

Challenge: Representational String Painting

Create a painting using string and paint that is representational.
