Lesson 29: Found-Object Assemblage

Objective: To have the children create constructions with found objects.

Vocabulary:

assemblage - A sculpture made of different kinds of materials.

form - An object that takes up space has height, width, and depth (three-dimensional). Forms can be geometric, organic, or irregular.

found-object - A common or everyday object used in new ways as part of an artwork. Found objects are often used in assemblages and can be natural or manufactured.

variety - A design principle used to add interest to an artwork by using many different objects and art elements (line, shape, color, form, etc...).

Assemblage

An assemblage is a sculpture made of different objects and materials. Artists who make assemblages often use found-objects, or everyday objects they find, in their artworks. Look at the assemblage World Series by David Stewart. What found objects did the artist in his artwork? What lines, shapes, colors, and forms did he use to create variety?

Studio Time: Found-Object Assemblage

Materials:

Found Objects, Shoe Boxes, Construction Paper, Glue, Tempera Paint, Paintbrushes, Water Bowl

Plan

Gather some found-objects to use in your assemblage. Practice arranging them in different ways.
Check list:
- Create an assemblage.
- Use objects with different colors and forms to create variety.

Create

Paint the objects in your assemblage. Use different colors to create variety.

2. Arrange your objects inside a shoe box. Make sure to put objects in the in each corner of your box.
3. Glue your objects into place.

Reflect - Tell about your artwork.

Photograph and Submit your work on Google Classroom.

Photograph sketches as well as completed artwork.
"Add" (attach) to Google Classroom assignment.
"Mark as done" to submit your work for a grade.

Challenge: Foil Assemblage

Create an assemblage of a variety of objects glued onto cardboard and completely cover with foil to unify the artwork.
