Getting Started: Line Styles & Rhythmic Coloring

Objective: To have children create a drawing using common line styles and coloring rhythmically for quality craftsmanship

Vocabulary

artwork - A work of art, such as a drawing, painting, printing, or sculpture.

craftsmanship - the quality of design and work shown in something made by hand; artistry.

dot - A small point, mark, or spot

drawing - A picture made with a pencil, pen, crayon, marker, or pastel.

line - A mark that has length (one-dimension) which begins at one point and continues to another point for a certain distance in a certain direction. Lines have properties (physical characteristics) and styles (common names).

line style - The common names we give to lines, such as straight, angled, zigzag, jagged, curved, curvy, curly, bumpy, wavy, scalloped, spiral, etc...

Line Style

A famous artist and art teacher, Paul Klee, once said, "A line is a dot, that took a walk."

Line styles are the names we give to lines. We will be drawing lines to create and artwork.

Craftsmanship is about how well something is made. Something that is made well will be thought of as having higher quality and will be lasting. We will be using rhythmic coloring which will make your artwork look better and take less time ot finish.

Materials

white paper, pencil, eraser, black sharpie marker, markers

Create

Draw
-Use a pencil to draw a straight line that extends from one side of the paper to another.
-Repeat for angled, zigzag, curved, and curvy.
-Carefully trace your pencil lines with a black sharpie marker and erase any leftover pencil line that may be showing.
Color
- Choose a different color for each shape and color rhythmically. Color in the same direction while staying within the lines you have created.
