Lesson 1: Textured Tree

Objective: To have children draw a tree using an outline and a variety of line styles to create visual texture.

Vocabulary:

contour lines - Lines that show an objects shape or form.

drawing - A picture made with a pencil, pen, crayon, marker, or pastel.

expressive qualities - Characteristics of art elements that make the elements affect the viewer's feelings. Lines, shapes, colors, and forms all have expressive qualities.

line - A mark that has length (one-dimension) which begins at one point and continues to another point for a certain distance in a certain direction. Lines have properties (physical characteristics) and styles (common names).

line style - The common names we give to lines, such as straight, angled, zigzag, jagged, curved, curvy, curly, bumpy, wavy, scalloped, spiral, etc...

outline - The line along the outside edge of a shape.

Studio Time: Textured Tree

Materials:

markers, construction paper, tissue paper, pencil, erasers, glue

Plan

Think about a tree and the kind of lines you see on a tree. Draw a few trees in a sketchbook or on a scratch paper.
Check list:
- Use an outline to create the tree trunk and branches.
- Use contour lines to create a visual texture for the bark of the tree.

Create

Draw the outline of a tree. Use many styles of lines. Use a pencil so you can make changes, and then trace over pencil lines with marker.
Draw jagged lines on the inside parts of the tree and branches to show the texture of tree bark.
Draw an animal, insect, or bird that lives in your tree.
Glue on tissue paper for leaves.

Challenge: Tree Scene

Create a tree scene with construction paper and markers using different line patterns on each tree.
