Lesson 15: Community Mural

Objective: To have the children create a mural paintings that shows compositional movement.

Vocabulary:

compositional movement - The way a viewer's eyes travel from one element to another in an artwork.

compositional structure - Common arrangements of art elements that acts a strong foundation or armature and makes the artwork interesting for the viewer.

mural - A large painting that is created on a wall or ceiling. A mural can be painted on an indoor or outdoor surface.

purpose - The reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists, such as narrative, info, time-piece, aesthetic, process, etc...

scale - The overall size of an artwork.

sequential composition - The arrangement of the parts of an artwork in a series of steps.

subject or subject matter - What an artwork is about.

Mural Art

A mural is a large painting that covers a wall on the inside or the outside of a building. The Market by Diego Rivera shows a mural on a building in Mexico City, Mexico. Why do you think an artist would choose to paint murals instead of smaller paintings?
Murals often show people doing everyday things. Look at the crowded street in The Market. How did the artist create movement in his mural? What path do your eyes take around it?

Mural (America) by Unknown Artists is part of a large mural made by a group of children. What story do you think it tells about the United States? What kinds of patterns did the artists create in Mural (America)?

Materials:

Sketchbook, Pencil, Butcher Paper, Tempera Paints, Paintbrushes, Water bowls

Plan

Think about a community. Plan what objects or symbols you will use to tell about the community.
Check list:
- Create a mural about a community.
- Use compositional movement in your mural.

Create

Work with a partner to brainstorm ideals for a mural about your community or another community. Then sketch one idea.
Transfer your sketch to a large sheet of butcher paper.
Think about how you want viewers' eyes to move around the mural. Place objects in the mural to create compositional movement.
Paint your mural.

Reflect - Tell about your artwork.

Photograph and Submit your work on Google Classroom.

Photograph sketches as well as completed artwork.
"Add" (attach) to Google Classroom assignment.
"Mark as done" to submit your work for a grade.
