Lesson 13: Rain Forest Scene

Objective: To have children create a scene repeating patterns of colors, lines, and shapes to create rhythm.

Vocabulary:

neutral colors - The neutral colors are black, white, brown, and gray. These colors are used to create tints, shades, tones, and intensity.

pattern - A design made up of repeated lines, shapes, colors, or forms.

rhythm - Repeating art elements (dots, lines, shapes, forms, space, textures, colors, values, and time) in various ways or the sense of movement created by repeated art elements.

scene - A view of a certain place.

story elements - Objects in an artwork used to tell a story or narrative.

Patterns Show Rhythm

In most art, your eyes will follow a pattern of colors, lines, or shapes. This movement that comes from patterns is called rhythm.

Studio Time: Rain Forest Scene

Materials:

Construction Paper - Neutral Colors (gray and light brown), Oil Pastels, Pencils

Plan

Imagine a rain forest with things moving in it. What patterns could you use to show this?
* Look up picture of rain forests for ideas
Check list:
- Create rhythm by repeating plants.
- Create rhythm by repeating animals.

Create

Color trees and other plants. Make patterns with things like flowers, leaves, and tree trunks.

2. Add a pattern of animals moving across the picture. Give your picture a strong rhythm.

Challenge: Rhythm Near and Far

Create a scene with an object that repeats from large to small using pencil, include a background then color with paint.
